The best way to clean a draft beer system is with a re-circulating pump. Hand pumps and cleaning kegs simply can't match the job a re-circulating pump does.
Cleaning using a recirculating pump is up to 80x more effective than a static clean used by in a hand pump.
Electric cleaning is the preferred method of cleaning beer systems. Pumps recirculate chemicals at an increased flow rate. This higher rate adds mechanical cleaning action (through turbulence) during the cleaning process. Recirculation cleaning is up to 80 times more efficient than static pressure pot cleaning.
Re-circulating pumps use a both mechanical force and caustic chemicals to clean beer lines. While the caustic cleaning solution is cycling the pressure of the solution being pushed through the lines increases. This pressure makes electric pumps much more effective than hand pumps and cleaning kegs.
Sonic cleaners can be useful in preventing yeast & bacteria growth. However, this type of cleaning has little or no cleaning effect on the draught system’s hardware and fittings.
